How to keep your AI agent running 24/7

A part-time agent is a novelty. An always-on agent is genuinely useful: it can watch your inbox, run your daily schedules and be ready the instant you message it, day or night. The difference is reliability, and reliability comes from a few deliberate choices about hardware, sleep and automatic recovery.

Use a machine that can stay on

The single biggest factor is running the agent on a computer that is happy to stay powered around the clock.

• •A Mac mini is the popular choice: small, quiet, power-efficient and content running headless with no screen attached.
• •A spare laptop works if you keep it plugged in and stop the lid from sleeping it.
• •Your daily-driver laptop is the worst choice: it sleeps, moves and reboots too often to be dependable.

Stop it sleeping

An agent that is asleep cannot answer you or run a scheduled job. Sleep is the most common reason an otherwise healthy agent goes quiet.

• •Disable system sleep and disk sleep so the machine never idles off.
• •Add a keep-awake service that holds the machine on even with no one logged in at the screen.
• •On a laptop, make sure closing the lid does not force it to sleep.

Restart automatically

Even a stable agent will occasionally stop: a software update, a power blip, an unexpected error. What matters is that it comes straight back without you noticing.

• •Set the agent to launch on boot or login, so a reboot brings it back on its own.
• •Use a service that relaunches it automatically if the process stops.
• •Make sure it recovers cleanly after a power cut, not into a broken state that needs a human.

Watch its health

The final layer is knowing quickly if something is wrong. A simple health check, or a second machine that watches the first, means a rare outage is measured in minutes rather than days. For a lot of people this is the point where doing it yourself stops being worth the effort.
